Santa Maria de Jesús

Santa Maria de Jesús

Santa Maria de Jesús

Woven corte, or mayan skirt, indigo navy with white stripes and rows of flowers! It is from the town of Santa Maria de Jesús. The corte is a wrap-around skirt that consists of a cut of cloth usually joined to form a tube into which the woman steps. Excess material is wrapped around the body and folded at the waist in pleats, and tied with a faja (belt).

This elegant corte measures 41″ wide and 53″ long (laid flat). Cortes are generally sewn together to make a tube, but this one is not. It is a full flat piece of fabric.

This corte is beautiful with its accented design that is common for the Santa Maria de Jesús region. It has a seam, or randa, of flowers in yellow and green that runs the length of the corte and one that runs the width.

This corte is in good used condition, and very soft, with a few signs of wear and gentle fading of the dark blue fabric.

Santa Maria de JesúsSanta Maria de Jesús

Stunning tzute from the town of Santa Maria de Jesús. This large and beautiful tzute measures 37″ wide, and 48″ long.

This tzute is beautiful with its deep colors and hand weaving that feature the traditional animal motifs of Santa Maria de Jesús. The colors are yellow, blue, green, purple and pink. The thread used to weave this tzute are mostly acrylic and lustrina. Where the two lienzos join, there is a lovely randa of flowers, birds, fish, shrimp, and grapes that is machine embroidered free-hand. The background fabric is woven red cotton. Due to the thickness of the weaving, this tzute is a bit heavy.

This tzute is in good vintage used condition, with some signs of wear. There are two smaller areas where thinning and/or holes were repaired by the owner. They are in the lower left area of the tzute. They have been machine stitched, and are difficult to see. Some of the edge trim along the lower right edge has worn off. This would be expected in a vintage tzute. There are a few loose threads.

Very darling child’s embroidered huipil, full of lifelike quetzales! It is from the town of Santa Maria de Jesús. This lovely huipil measures 21″ across the shoulders, and 21″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is round and measures 5″ in diameter. The sides have had the stitching removed to open the arm holes, but can easily be restitched if desired.

This huipil is absolutely beautiful with brilliant colored embroidery that features two quetzales (national bird of Guatemala) on each side of the huipil in a flower garden full of wonderful flowers and playful bunnies. The colors are glowing jewel colors of greens, pinks, blues, purples, oranges, yellows and more! The neckline is accented with black crochet. The background is a black commercial cotton blend fabric. The embroidery is machine done free-hand, and is truly an art form. Just amazing! This is a wonderful example of the incredibly beautiful ‘fiesta’ huipiles of Santa Maria de Jesús.

This huipil is in good used condition with some loose threads throughout the bodice as well as small hole on one side in the background fabric perhaps caused when the sleeve stitching was removed. This can be easily repaired and is not readily visible.

Unique special occasion huipil from Santa Maria de Jesús. This striking and different huipil measures 31 ½” across the shoulders, and 26 ½” from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is more or less square and measures 5 ½” in each of the four sides.

This striking huipil is lovely in its predominately deep-red and green design woven with arti-seda thread giving it an iridescent feel. The bodice is filled completely with a double-headed eagle design and accented with the more common (from Santa Maria de Jesús) diamonds across the shoulders. This elegant piece has accent colors of purple, blue, and pink. The collar and sleeves are trimmed with a simple black crochet and the neckline is trimmed on the inside with coordinating purple cotton. The all arti-seda design is woven on a medium to heavy black cotton background. The weaving on this piece is so fine, that the design is completely reversed on the inside of the huipil.
