Beautiful huipil from the Quetzaltenango/Xela region in Guatemala. This huipil measures 27 1/2″ across the shoulders, and 27″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is round and measures 6” in diameter.
This huipil is a huipil de luto (mourning) generally worn after the death of a spouse or loved one; thus the extensive use of purple. It is a beautiful example of luto huipil that is not often seen for sale.
The colors are a sea of purple, black, and yellow/gold, with purple pansies cascading down the front and back and adorning the neckline. Joining the pansies around the collar are a sweet pair of hummingbirds on one side and a solitary hummingbird on the other. There are gathers on each side, giving it a slightly ruffled look, and the sides are closed, creating sleeve holes.
This huipil is in very good used condition. There is some slight wear in the form of a couple of loose threads and a slight amount of discoloration in the lower white section where the purple has faded into the white cotton. There is a very tiny hole on the lower white part where one of the gathers was pulled. It is perhaps 1mm in diameter; very difficult to notice.
